As a student at Osaka University of the Arts, Ohno specialized in 3-D animation but the cost of 3-D animation software is astronomically high. Instead of giving up on her dream, Monami Ohno used her creativity to find a solution in old cardboard boxes.

Ohno took old Amazon boxes and used them as her canvas for honing her skills.

Ohno makes her sculptures by using different pieces of cardboard boxes for texture and shape. She also carves designs into the cardboard to really give the pieces life-like details.

While these sculptures were originally meant to simply help her grow as an artist, they became Ohno’s primary medium. Now, Monami Ohno can make almost anything out of nothing but cardboard.
