A Trainee Was Chased By Sasaengs Just For Being Seen With A Famous K-Pop Idol

They wouldn’t leave her alone.

As a former trainee who’s spent over ten years at companies like JYP Entertainment and LOEN Entertainment, Gina Maeng became close with many K-Pop idols who have debuted. When helping a male idol, she recalled how it ended by being chased by sasaengs (obsessive fans).

Because Gina Maeng often helped her close idol friends keep their romantic relationships private, she remembered one time when it took a dangerous turn. One of her male idol friends invited her to a café to plan a 100-day anniversary surprise for his idol girlfriend. There was one particular detail he ignored, though.

The idol appeared at the café looking as if he’d just stepped off stage, wearing his entire stage outfit in broad daylight in the busiest part of Seoul.

I thought he was gonna get covered up with a baseball cap and everything. He came right after a music show.

So he was in his TV hair and makeup, no mask. I’m like, ‘Are you crazy?’

Gina Maeng had been worried for a good reason. She explained, “I’m like, ‘Are you trying to get me killed?’ Cause back then, this idol had A LOT of fans and a lot of serious stalker-ish fans where they just followed him everywhere.

He was so popular that she noticed “all the tables around [them] were occupied by his fans.” So all of them saw the male idol holding Gina Maeng’s hand as he measured her ring size—so he could get a similar size for his girlfriend. That was all it took for his crazed fans to act.

So he took my hand and was trying to measure it with a tape measure or something. And yeah, it was not fun.

I had to switch cabs like five times when I was gonna go home because people were chasing me, screaming at me with their windows down. It was not fun.

Since Gina Maeng was once attacked with a brick just for performing with Rain, she’s had more than enough dangerous encounters with fans who don’t respect boundaries. Fortunately, she was able to escape both situations safely.
