Everyone Is Mesmerized By Red Velvet – Irene & Seulgi’s Perfect “Tutting” Dance In New MV “Naughty”

Only a few K-Pop groups have ever attempted this style of dance.

Red Velvet’s first unit, Irene & Seulgi, just released their music video for second single “Naughty”, and everyone is talking about how perfectly they executed tutting in their choreography.

Tutting is a unique dance genre which revolves around creating precise geometric angles with the arms and hands, swiftly transitioning between complex moves.

Despite how difficult the style is to execute, the ambitious choreography for Irene & Seulgi’s “Naughty” is almost entirely composed of tutting moves.

The dance was choreographed by experienced tutting dancer Spella as well as one of Red Velvet’s usual choreographers, Shim Jaewon.

Both members previously talked about the extensive practice it took to master the “Naughty” choreography, and Irene noted that fans would notice if even one finger was out of place.

Some of the moves are so impressive, fans can’t believe the members’ bodies can twist into such angles without Photoshop.

On top of the dancing itself, fans have praised the use of clever camera angles and editing tricks to make the whole performance even more visually intriguing. In one scene, it appears that Irene is wearing a head camera to film Seulgi dancing through the frame of her own arms.

In another, the aspect ratio of the video itself is changed to highlight how well Seulgi and Irene complement each other.

Tutting became popular on the streets of the United States back in the 1980s, but it’s rarely seen in K-Pop choreography. And, when it is seen, it’s usually performed by boy groups. The few songs which have previously incorporated tutting into their moves include BTS’s “Dope”, SHINee’s “Lucifer”, and Super Junior’s “Sorry, Sorry”.

As one of the few female artists in the industry to ever attempt this complex style, Irene and Seulgi are taking Red Velvet performances to new heights.

And, this is just “episode 1”. At the end of the “Naughty” music video, Irene and Seulgi part ways, alluding to the “episode 2” and “episode 3” solo performances SM Entertainment announced previously.
