Netflix has been on a roll with its original series premieres, as Squid Game, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha and more take over the streaming platform with their impressively high viewership ratings. As Netflix fans’ expectations for K-related premieres continues to remain at an all-time high, there’s one particular upcoming docuseries that has started to gain viral attention.
Titled The Raincoat Killer: Chasing a Predator in Korea, the docuseries is based on the story of the infamous Korean serial killer, Yoo Young Chul. Yoo made headlines back in 2003 when he admitted to killing several wealthy senior citizens between the months of September and November.
He would break into their homes and murder them by bludgeoning them with a hammer. To cover his tracks, Yoo would then create a scene to make it seem like a robbery had taken place at the victims’ homes. However, this is not where his story ends.
Once the police investigation began to intensify, it was then that Yoo began to change his crimes. He went from murdering wealthy senior citizens to murdering female prostitutes — and in 2004, Yoo would go on a murder spree, killing a total of 11 prostitutes. After he was arrested for his involvement in the murders, Yoo confessed to killing a total of 26 individuals.
Yoo was sentenced to death in December 2004 for his involvement in the dozens of murders. And while his sentencing happened 17 years ago, Yoo Young Chul remains alive at the Seoul Detention center, where he is currently being detained and carrying out his sentence.
This infamous case remains one of South Korea’s biggest high profile cases, as it continues to make headlines — and almost two decades after Yoo Young Chul’s arrest, the story has been made into a Netflix series. The Raincoat Killer: Chasing a Predator in Korea will take viewers through the events in never-before-seen footage, including interviews with people that were involved in the case.
The Netflix original docuseries will be premiering on October 22, 2021. Will you be tuning in?
