“The King” Suffers Advisory Warning From the KCS for Commercialization of Sex Controversy

The Korea Communications Standards recently held a censorship review to evaluate programs that broadcasted scenes that lacked gender sensitivity.

As a result, the KCS came to the decision that The King: Eternal Monarch, which faced controversy for scenes that challenged gender equality, would receive an advisory warning.

Ahead of this decision, The King: Eternal Monarch came under fire for a scene where the female prime minister stated,

Bras without wires can’t support the chest.

In addition, during a boat race scene, a female spectator made the comment,

Men need to wear less and move around lots.

Following the broadcast, many raised the worry that such scenes promote fixed stereotypes related to gender.

The KCS expressed,

In a situation where gender equality is deemed important, public media such as broadcasts have a duty to take the lead in promoting gender equality through gender sensitivity. It is concerning that content relating to glorification of sex crimes, commercialization of sex, and encouragement of fixed gender stereotypes were included in the content.
