BTS’s Golden Disc Award Daesang Is A Bigger Deal Than You Realized, Here’s Why

They broke SM Entertainment’s 9-year winning streak.

At the 32nd Golden Disc Awards, BTS was able to become the first non-SM Entertainment artist to win the prestigious Disc Daesang in 9 years.

Selling a staggering 1,493,443 copies of their 5th mini-album LOVE YOURSELF 承 ‘Her, they were able to beat out many strong contenders, including EXO, Wanna One, and TWICE.

SM Entertainment started their Disc Daesang reign in 2008 with TVXQ‘s 4th album, Mirotic. The following year Super Junior got their first daesang with Sorry, Sorry. In 2010 Girls’ Generation made history by being the first and currently only girl group to ever receive a disc daesang with their second album Oh!.

Super Junior continued their reign for two years in a row in 2012-2013 with Mr. Simple and Sexy, Free & Single, respectively.

For the last 4 years, between 2014-2017, EXO has won the Disc Daesang with their albums Ex’Act’, Exodus, Overdose, and XOXO. They also set a record by being the first artist to win a daesang with a mini album, for Overdose. BTS is now the second group to do so with Love Yourself: Her, their 5th mini album.

In addition to BTS’ record-breaking sales, 26 out of 30 experts on the Golden Disc Awards panel chose BTS’s album as the best of the year.

They received 290 out of a possible 300 points, placing first in the experts’ criteria.

It’s no wonder BTS received the Disc Daesang, being recognized by both their fans and renowned experts in the industry. Congratulations again to BTS!
