Get To Know Some Popular Korean Rest Area Foods With BTS’s Jungkook

A guide on how to eat like him on a road trip!

BTS‘s maknae Jungkook recently posted a camping vlog where he was seen happily munching on some rest area snacks on his way to Goseong. Just like a true mukbang YouTuber, the clips of him eating was so satisfactory that some viewers couldn’t help but feel hungry while watching!

So, here’s a list of everything you need to know about the snacks he ate at the rest stop, in case you want to try them out!

1. Sotteok-Sotteok

This popular Korean street food is made with fried rice cakes (garaetteok) and Vienna sausages. The rice cakes and the sausages are piled on a skewer alternatively and brushed with different sauces. The name of the snack comes from this alternative arrangement, “So” from “sausage” (its Korean pronunciation being so-se-ji) and “tteok” from “Garaetteok.”

2. Tornado Potato

Also known as “tornado fries,” this is another popular street food in South Korea that was originally created by Jeong Eun Suk of Agricultural Hoeori Inc. The snack is basically a whole potato on a skewer that is spirally cut, deep-fried, and brushed with a variety of seasonings such as onion or cheese.

3. Chicken Gangjeong

Chicken Gangjeong is a deep-fried boneless chicken dish where the meat is glazed with a sweet and spicy sauce. It is a typical Korean dish, originating from a traditional Korean confectionary called Gangjeong.

Gangjeong is made with deep-fried sweet rice crackers that are then coated in syrup and topped with puffed rice, sesame seeds, or nuts. This technique of deep frying and then coating with a sweet syrup got adopted for cooking other sweet and savory dishes as well.

4. Shrimp Gangjeong

The idea of this dish is the same as Chicken Gangjeong. Shrimp is coated with batter, deep fried, and then brushed with a sweet and spicy sauce.

5. Sweet Potato Sticks

Sweet potato is a well-loved food choice in South Korea. These sweet potato sticks are thinner and shorter than french fries and offer a crunchy texture throughout. You can get baked versions of this snack that are popular as a healthier alternative for fries.
